Booking through Thursday: Favorite Unknown

Who’s your favorite author that other people are NOT reading? The one you want to evangelize for, the one you would run popularity campaigns for? The author that, so far as you’re concerned, everyone should be reading–but that nobody seems to have heard of. You know, not JK Rowling, not Jane Austen, not Hemingway–everybody’s heard of them. The author that you think should be that famous and can’t understand why they’re not...

I would like to preface my response by pointing out, in the words of John Lennon, "There's nothing you can know that isn't known." All published authors are known as authors by someone. That having been said, I'm really tempted to mention Gwen Zepeda because I don't think many people outside of Texas read her work...yet. However, I'm going to have to go with another local author on this one: David Eagleman.

Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives by David Eagleman

Maybe you've heard of him; maybe you haven't. I know that if he hadn't visited the library where I work, I would never have heard of this neuroscientist-cum-short fiction author. In this revolutionary collection, Eagleman presents 40 vignettes that propose different "realities" of the afterlife - from the bizarre to the mundane.

In my favorite version of the afterlife, Mary Shelley is revered because God's favorite book is Frankenstein. Eagleman's writing in this profound, yet slim volume of metaphysical fiction is delicious. His inventiveness and humor create a tone that makes his work read like a Vonnegut novel.

I'm sure he says that to all the librarians! :-) READ THIS BOOK, AND ENJOY THE POSSIBILITIES!

I've never heard of him, so he's unknown at least to me :)
